Ceiling decoration

Ink and paint on ceiling

London, UK

Wide view of an interior ceiling mural with black linework and a blue arrow shape

About the work

An experiment in decorating the ceiling of a mezzanine floor.

The flowing design alludes to smoke rising from a fire, but you could also see this as a river flowing to its estuary.

You will notice on the same ceiling other murals, each with a different consideration:

There is the growth from behind an arrow, which I initially envisioned spreading out over the whole ceiling, but I soon decided that doing so would be far too dense.

My next attempt, then, was to use masking tape to make a small square which I could fill in, as a patch on the ceiling. That, I liked.

On a larger scale, mindful of wanting to avoid over-bearing masses of black, I decided to demarcate three panels. From there, I wanted a liquid form which flowed within those borders. Beyond the sinuous form, there are gaps inside the actual mass, which create highlights and contribute to the sense of flow, of movement.

I also gave myself tendonitis doing this. Was it worth it? Yes. Note to self: take frequent breaks and remember to stretch...
